Primary Transition Programmes – Taking Steps to Success

Let’s face it, there are very few adults who like change – yet we expect the children we work with to embrace it with open arms as they progress from Key Stage 1 to 2 and from primary school to secondary school! Schools make strenuous efforts to prepare pupils for these transitions – and our exciting range of Taking Steps to Success programmes have been designed to support you in this.

Led by professional artists from a range of disciplines, each has been developed to help the children consider both the fresh opportunities that transition brings them and ways of overcoming any challenges they might meet – and each culminates in artistic outcomes.

All programmes last half a day – and are suitable for up to thirty pupils. We are also able to offer shorter workshops to accommodate four form entry schools in one day.

KS1 – KS2: Moving Up To The Juniors – SuperHeroes!

Working with one of our professional illustrators, your Year 2 pupils will use a range of drawing games and techniques to design and make extraordinary comic strips starring stupendous superheroes. They’ll equip their superheroes with some of the skills that they themselves possess – and help them use their powers to tackle the new situations they find themselves in.

Outcomes: High quality illustrated comic strips to keep as a memento of the day; a consideration of personal strengths; an exploration of the changes that moving to the juniors might bring; an increased understanding of narrative structure.

KS1 – KS2: Moving Up To The Juniors – Pathways to Happiness

Supported by one of our team of professional artists, your Year 2’s will consider what makes a successful board game – then design and create unique games that explore the rewards that accompany the transition to Year 3. And the great thing about these games is that everyone’s a winner!

Outcomes: A range of dynamic and humorous board games to keep and play; a consideration of personal strengths; an exploration of the benefits that moving to the juniors might bring; an increased understanding of co-operative play.

KS2 – KS3: Preparing for a New School – The Power of Puppets

Your Year 6 pupils will be amazed at how easy it is to make our engaging and colourful puppets from textiles, found materials and everyday objects. And you will be too, as they develop their mascots into characters who can guide them through life’s changes – and create simple puppet shows in which there are no hurdles that can’t be leaped!

Outcomes: Individualised textile puppets designed and hand-crafted by the children; increased motivation towards problem solving; increased peer support; increased understanding of narrative structure.

“Jackson’s approach was relaxed but well-paced. He quickly realised the ability of the children and responded to that.” Class Teacher

KS2 – KS3: Preparing for a New School – People and Places

Working with director Jackson Kavanagh or actor Jo Stokes, your future Year 7s will take part in an interactive telling of the final chapter of “The House at Pooh Corner”, exploring how life will change for Christopher Robin as he leaves the Hundred Acre Wood forever. Working in small groups, they’ll then devise and perform short dramas exploring a variety of characters as they go through a range of transitions.

Outcomes: A range of drama scenes that can either be filmed or re-enacted for other pupils and/or parents/carers; increased appreciation of the opportunities offered by moving to secondary school; increased appetite for problem solving; increased confidence.
