We’re well aware that schools often want large numbers of their pupils to share the experience of participating in our Creative Maths workshops – so we’ve specifically designed programmes such as The Pirate’s Challenge, The Captain’s Conundrum and The Trading Game to cater for up to 60 pupils per workshop. But as the challenge from schools to work with even more pupils in one sitting was always there, we can now offer Murderous Maths – available to a jaw-dropping 180 young people at a time!

Murderous Maths, specially designed to cater for and engage pupils across age and ability ranges, has already allowed every child in Haverfordwest Junior School (Pembrokeshire), Riverview Primary (Salford) and Marshside Primary (Southport) to share an interactive problem-solving experience – while the three-form-entry St John’s Primary (Gravesend) was able to offer it to all Year 3 and Year 4 pupils. And the whole of Year 7 at The Canterbury Academy got to try their hands at being detectives in our special version for KS3!

And that’s not the only amazing thing about Murderous Maths – as it can also see primary school children from Year 1 to Year 6 engaging at the same time (while there’s a version for secondary schools, too – see below for more details)! All 180 participants follow the story of The Grisly Demise of Puffing Billy (literally frightened to death on the London Underground a hundred years ago), meeting some of his shady friends before engaging with a series of age-appropriate activities allowing them to whittle down the list of suspects, one by one. But once one mystery has been cleared up, there’s another to solve – with up to three classes invited to unravel another crime in follow-up workshops (all differentiated for age).

The unique structure of Murderous Maths allowed every child in Haverfordwest Junior School (Pembrokeshire), Riverview Primary (Salford) and Marshside Primary (Southport) to share an interactive problem-solving experience – while the three-form-entry St John’s Primary (Gravesend) was able to offer it to all Year 3 and Year 4 pupils. And the whole of Year 7 at The Canterbury Academy got to try their hands at being detectives in our special version for KS3!

“5 *  – A huge thank you to Jackson and Chris for bringing Murderous Maths to River View Primary School! The children and staff really enjoyed the experience. It was a wonderful way to engage and motivate the children with problem solving and reasoning! We would definitely book again, thank you so much!” (Kathryn Marriott, Riverview Primary)

In a lively yet purposeful context, Murderous Maths gives pupils opportunities to practice a whole range of Maths skills – from understanding geometric properties to working with time, from using money to exploring number patterns – all while developing both additive and multiplicative reasoning.
